Five Things Seniors Can Do At Home To Alleviate The Symptoms Of Arthritis

Arthritis and joint pain are common complaints of senior patients. In some cases, these conditions can be so severe that they require home care nursing services to help seniors take care of everyday mobility and self-care issues. 

Although arthritis can't be entirely cured, there are a lot of things senior patients can do to alleviate the symptoms and reduce any discomfort they feel. The following are five things seniors can do at home to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis:

Engage in aquatic exercises

Patients suffering from arthritis might find it difficult to engage in certain forms of exercise. However, water exercises are often ideal for those who are suffering from arthritis pains.

Being in the water while exercising helps to support the joints and eases strain on the body. Water exercises can help seniors suffering from arthritis to build up muscle strength that takes some of the pressure off of the joints. 

Stay on top of medication dosages

Forgetting to take prescribed medications or taking them erratically can aggravate the symptoms of arthritis. Many medications prescribed to seniors help deal with issues like inflammation and blood pressure problems.

Neglecting to take such medications can make it more difficult to deal with arthritis. Seniors need to be careful to not only keep up on prescribed medications but also over-the-counter medications their doctors recommend that they take for joint pain. 

Maintain a healthy weight

Gaining weight inevitably puts greater strain on the joints, so maintaining a healthy weight is an important thing to do to avoid arthritis pain. Seniors dealing with arthritis should avoid having high-calorie diets and ideally can find some form of exercise they enjoy that will help them keep off extra pounds. 

Have a diet that's rich in healthy fats and low in saturated fats

Seniors shouldn't underestimate the benefits of consuming a lot of those healthy omega-3 fatty acids. This type of healthy fat is known for reducing inflammation, and inflammation can cause and aggravate arthritis.

At the same time, seniors should avoid saturated fats because they will increase inflammation and make it more difficult for senior patients to avoid gaining weight. 

Keep the home organized

As seniors age, they often suffer from mobility issues that make it difficult to stay balanced and steady, and arthritis pain can drastically aggravate these issues. Suffering a debilitating fall is one of the worst things that can happen to a senior because it can lead to permanent injuries and disability. A fall can also cause already existing arthritis pain to worsen. 

Living in a disorganized home is another factor that increases the risk of a severe fall. Keep an organized home to avoid devastating falls triggered by arthritis issues.
